With extensive experience as a platform engineer and technical leader, I specialise in designing and delivering large-scale, cloud-native solutions across AWS, GCP, Azure, and hybrid environments. I’m skilled at leveraging Kubernetes and modern DevOps practices to solve tough infrastructure, reliability, and scalability challenges. I have a proven track record of leading engineering teams through complex platform migrations and transformations, always ensuring our architecture and automation align closely with broader business goals. My strength lies in translating complex technical requirements into robust, practical solutions, bridging the gap between engineering and strategy to drive projects that deliver real business value.
Work Experience
Principal Consultant
As Principal Consultant at Sourced Group, I led large-scale cloud projects for major financial services clients, specialising in designing and building scalable AWS and Kubernetes platforms. I worked directly with executives, product owners, and technical teams to turn business goals into practical cloud solutions, from crafting overall strategy to hands-on implementation. I managed and mentored a high-performing team of engineers, championing quality and a culture of continuous learning, and was deeply involved in hiring to build the team’s capabilities. A key part of my role was guiding clients through their cloud migration journeys, ensuring secure, compliant, and seamless transitions of applications and data. Throughout, I bridged the gap between business and technology, helping clients realise real value and keep their projects aligned with their broader objectives.
- Spearheaded the creation and execution of complex cloud strategies, delivering significant value to clients and enhancing their digital capabilities.
- Managed and mentored a high-performing team of engineers, ensuring quality solutions and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
- Leveraged my strong expertise in AWS and Kubernetes to design and implement scalable and efficient cloud consumption platforms for large financial institutions.
- Collaborated closely with key stakeholders, bridging the gap between technical and business teams to align project goals with strategic objectives.
- Guided clients through their cloud transformation journeys, ensuring seamless migration of their infrastructures, applications, and data onto the cloud while maintaining top-tier security and compliance standards.
Interim CTO
I was the first technical hire at Sourcr, a platform for recruiters to showcase client reviews, where I designed and built their marketplace from the ground up, helping the company secure over half a million dollars in funding. As Interim CTO, I guided the founders on key technical decisions to keep business and tech priorities aligned, managed a team of engineers based in Eastern Europe, and was involved in hiring to make sure the right people would carry things forward after my departure. My work set the foundation for Sourcr’s future growth and contributed to its acquisition by Seek in 2021.
- Designed and spearheaded the implementation of a marketplace platform, a critical tool that enabled Sourcr to secure over half a million dollars in funding.
- Leveraged my expertise to guide the founders through technical decisions, optimizing their strategic direction and ensuring technical alignment with business goals.
- Involved in the hiring process, conducting interviews to ensure that the right talent would sustain Sourcr’s continued success after my departure.
- Managed a global team of dedicated engineers based in Eastern Europe, fostering effective collaboration and communication to meet organizational goals.
Founder
As the founder of RetroAnalytics, I built an analytics platform from scratch that used machine learning to automatically spot trends and user behaviour patterns. I managed everything from design to launching the product, and we grew quickly to over 600 customers, including large international ecommerce platforms, processing data from more than a million unique user interactions every day. For example, our platform was able to surface insights like “30% of customers who completed checkout had scrolled at least halfway down the free shipping page,” helping our clients make decisions such as reorganising their FAQs or making the shipping policy clearer on product pages. We saw strong interest from both users and investors, but ultimately had to close down due to challenges in finding a sustainable business model.
- Designed and established the core data ingestion pipeline, storage/query engine (pgSQL, Cassandra, JanusGraph) and the Web UI / backend API.
- Engineered machine learning algorithms adept at modeling usage patterns from unstructured data.
- Fostered relationships with customers and negotiated deals.
- Managed all facets of business operations, including accounting, hiring, investor relations, and sales.
Lead Engineer
At Finder, I helped bring the FinderAU brand to the US market, working side-by-side with the CEO and leadership team to make it happen. I designed an abstraction layer over the old Wordpress API, which sped up development and made it much easier to build new features. On top of that, I updated our infrastructure to support the new market and handled architectural changes to make the platform more reliable and scalable. I was also closely involved in brainstorming and building out features aimed specifically at US users to boost engagement and set us apart in a new space.
- Partnered with the CEO to design and implement a variety of split tests driving engagement.
- Designed and implemented the initial version of the abstraction API to streamline development over Wordpress.
- Established a modular scraping system on AWS
Lead Engineer
As the sole engineer on the Data Zoo project (now a leading global identity verification platform, acquired by GBG in 2024), I designed and built a system that connects with government databases in New Zealand, China, and Australia to help businesses verify identities securely and efficiently. I managed everything from architecture and coding to deployment and ongoing improvements. This platform processes thousands of ID checks every day for clients like Veda, Trulioo, Rabo Bank, HIFX, and others, making customer verification both faster and more reliable.
- Architected the system and implemented various data sources.
- Managed AWS infrastructure using complex nested CloudFormation stacks.
- Collaborated with clients to guide them through the integration process as needed.
- Worked with data providers to integrate new data sources as contracts were negotiated.
Senior Engineer
At THE ICONIC, I was responsible for architecting and building out the core platform infrastructure, setting up streamlined deployment systems for new features, and integrating the latest technologies in collaboration with infrastructure providers. For example, I overhauled our image processing system to provide on-demand (JIT) delivery, ensuring compatibility with legacy mobile apps and seamless integration with cloud storage. I also led the rebuild of our search engine using a custom Elasticsearch setup, tailoring indexing and ranking to better handle the scale and unique requirements of our catalogue. This resulted in faster, more accurate search results for customers, especially on high-traffic and popular queries.
- Architect and develop the core infrastructure of the platform.
- Set up systems for the deployment of new components.
- Collaborate with various infrastructure providers to integrate cutting-edge technologies into the system.
- Improve the efficiency of search engine matching/ranking algorithms for popular search queries.
Senior Engineer
At Shoptiques, a Y Combinator-backed startup, I was a key contributor in the architectural design and development of their bespoke e-commerce platform during an intensive 9-month contract period. My role involved strategic collaborations with boutique partners for optimal stock turnover and the execution of negotiations with service providers to rapidly advance platform development without the need for non-essential feature creation. Additionally, I steered front-end development tasks, maintained ElasticSearch operations, implemented A-B testing strategies, and fostered an engaging, positive office environment.
Senior Engineer
At News Digital Media, my role as a Senior Software Engineer involved handling multiple high-traffic websites, ensuring smooth operation using advanced caching technologies. My role required me to handle vast amounts of traffic, with millions of hits per month, while also gaining extensive exposure to ESI, Memcached, and legacy code. I was selected to lead the development of an internal dashboard project aimed at becoming open source, fostering transparent and informative intra-organization communication. Additionally, I collaborated with key stakeholders, planned agile sprints, and was responsible for coordinating releases to an array of servers while ensuring all code met stringent security standards.
